Pop icon Britney Spears is addressing recent tabloid reports that she lit a cigarette while aboard a commercial flight, offering her side of the story in a candid Instagram post.

On May 23, the singer explained that she was having her “first time drinking vodka” during the flight and mentioned aloud that she wanted a cigarette. According to Spears, a friend responded by placing a cigarette in her mouth and lighting it for her.

“I said, ‘I want a cigarette so bad,’ and my friend put one in my mouth and lit it up for me,” Spears wrote. “So I was like, OH SO THIS IS A PLANE WHERE YOU CAN SMOKE!!!”

The “Toxic” hitmaker acknowledged that the situation caused concern among the flight crew and apologized to anyone she may have offended. She noted that flight attendants typically seat her at the very back of the plane, which may have contributed to the confusion.

“I do so apologize to anyone I offended,” Spears added.

The situation escalated when, upon landing, authorities reportedly met Spears at the airport. At first, she said she thought it was a show of support.

“When officials greeted me, I was like, WOW, I feel special,” she wrote. “But then I realized it was because the flight attendant had called them over the cigarette.”

Spears also suggested the flight attendant had been unfriendly from the beginning of the flight, saying she felt the attendant acted overly strict and controlling.

“She didn’t like me the moment I got on the plane,” Spears claimed. “Nobody was on the plane for the first 20 minutes and she wouldn’t let me get out of my seat. I just wanted to stand up.”

The pop star said she felt uncomfortable when the attendant fastened her seatbelt, claiming the gesture felt invasive.

While Spears maintained she didn’t mean to violate any rules, she hinted that the incident may have been exaggerated in an effort to embarrass her.

Fans have since flooded the comments section of her Instagram post with a mix of support and concern. Spears’ response marks the latest in a series of headlines following her ongoing re-emergence on social media.
