Pacific Rim Live-Action Series in Development at Amazon with Eric Heisserer at the Helm
A new live-action Pacific Rim prequel series is in the works at Amazon, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer leading the project. The series marks a major expansion of the beloved sci-fi franchise.
The Pacific Rim universe is gearing up for a dramatic return—this time on the small screen. Amazon has officially entered development on a live-action TV series based on the blockbuster sci-fi franchise, with acclaimed writer-producer Eric Heisserer attached to lead the project.
The series is being developed under a partnership between Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with Prime Video set to serve as its streaming home. This marks the latest chapter in a franchise that began over a decade ago and has since expanded into films, anime, comics, and merchandise.
Details on the storyline are still under wraps, but insiders reveal that the show will act as a prequel to the original 2013 film. It’s the first television project under Heisserer’s first-look deal with Legendary through his production company, Chronology.
Eric Heisserer brings an impressive resume to the table. He’s best known for writing and executive producing Netflix’s Shadow and Bone and received an Academy Award nomination for the film Arrival. His additional writing credits include Bird Box, Bloodshot, Lights Out, and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The original Pacific Rim film, directed by Guillermo del Toro and co-written with Travis Beacham, became a global hit when it debuted in 2013, pulling in more than $400 million worldwide. Its sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, was released in 2018, followed by the animated spin-off Pacific Rim: The Black, which aired for two seasons on Netflix from 2021 to 2022.
The franchise centers around humanity's fight for survival after monstrous kaiju emerge from an interdimensional rift deep in the Pacific Ocean. To counter the threat, humans develop towering mechs known as Jaegers, piloted by pairs of fighters connected through a neural link.
This announcement is part of a broader content push by Legendary Television and Amazon. The two studios are also developing a TV adaptation of Murdle, a popular murder mystery puzzle brand, and currently boast several other high-profile projects like the Monsterverse series Monarch for Apple TV+, Dune: Prophecy for Max, and The Legend of Lara Croft at Netflix.
As Pacific Rim fans eagerly await more details, one thing is clear: the battle between kaiju and Jaegers is far from over—and this time, it’s coming to your living room.
