Trump Honors West Point’s Star Athletes During Uplifting Commencement Address
During his commencement speech at West Point, Donald Trump praised the academy’s top athletes, including the nationally ranked lacrosse and football teams. He also spotlighted quarterback Bryson Daily for choosing military service over the NFL.
In a spirited commencement address at the United States Military Academy at West Point, former President Donald Trump took a moment to spotlight the athletic achievements of the cadets, praising the school’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
“I love the sports stuff. What you've done is pretty amazing,” Trump remarked, before highlighting the Army men’s lacrosse team, which made history last year by securing the No. 1 national ranking for the first time.
Trump also celebrated the academy’s football accomplishments, noting back-to-back victories against Navy and Air Force in previous seasons, along with a recent surge into the national top 20—West Point’s longest winning streak since 1949.
At the center of his praise was graduating quarterback Cadet Bryson Daily, affectionately nicknamed “Captain America.” Trump lauded Daily’s physical strength and leadership, recalling attending a game where he believed Daily had NFL potential.
“He could get into the NFL,” Trump said. “But he chose this life. And I think he made a good choice.”
At Trump’s urging, Daily briefly addressed the crowd with a short but heartfelt message:
“Go Army football. Can’t wait to graduate. Love you guys.”
Trump, visibly impressed, added with a smile, “I just tapped his shoulder. It’s like I hit a piece of steel. The guy's in good shape.”
More than just athletic prowess, Trump highlighted Daily’s dedication to military service, referencing an earlier interview in which the quarterback stated his focus was on becoming an infantry officer.
“That’s service at its finest,” Trump concluded. “Thanks, Bryson. You’re an amazing guy with an amazing team.”
This marked Trump’s second graduation speech of the month, following a similar address to graduates in Alabama, where he also praised local athletic talent and legendary coach Nick Saban.
Closing his West Point remarks, Trump called the academy “the most elite and storied military academy in human history,” expressing admiration for the 1,002 graduating cadets and their dedication to service, discipline, and patriotism.
